The most important lever in student achievement is the effectiveness of teachers, administrators, and other support staff. Knowing how to "adjust the lever" can be a challenge. School district leaders today are asking themselves "What does an effective teacher look like?" or "What processes can I put in place to motivate and retain the best and the brightest?"

Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida is answering these questions and addressing these challenges. The result: They are recent recipients of a $100M education grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the key missions of the Gates Foundation is to improve the effectiveness of teachers.
